Sea Glass Island or Mangel Halto: which tour should you book?

We run two routes on the same coast and guests ask us to choose for them roughly once a day. We will not, because the honest answer depends on what you actually want out of a morning, but we can lay both of them out clearly enough that the choice makes itself. Same price, same duration, same cap of 10 guests. Genuinely different days.

The short answer, if you are in a hurry

If you want somewhere to arrive, a small island to land on and something to hunt for once you are there, take Sea Glass Island.

If you want the best time in the water, mangrove channels and two snorkel stops, take Mangel Halto.

If you want either one with the sun going down, take the 5:00 PM departure and stop reading.

Sea Glass Island, in a paragraph

You launch from the ramp beside the Flying Fishbone restaurant in Savaneta and cross open water to a low island off the coast. The shoreline there is scattered with glass that decades of waves have worn frosted and soft, in greens, browns and gentle whites, and the haul changes with every tide, so nobody gets the same island twice. There is a real sense of arrival to it. You paddled somewhere, and then you were somewhere.

Because it is an open crossing rather than a sheltered one, wind has more say in how the paddle feels. On a normal south coast morning that means a pleasant amount of work. It is not a hard tour, but you will notice you did something.

Mangel Halto and Spanish Lagoon, in a paragraph

You meet at the Mangel Halto beach sign in Pos Chiquito and paddle into the mangrove channels, which are narrow, shaded and completely still. The tour then works out to the reef for two snorkel stops, one on the barrier reef and one on the coral garden. This is the route for people whose real interest is what is under the surface, and it is also the calmer of the two, which matters if somebody in your party is uncertain about kayaking at all.

Side by side

Where you meet. Sea Glass Island: the ramp next to the Flying Fishbone, Savaneta. Mangel Halto: the beach sign in Pos Chiquito. Both are a straightforward drive on the south coast road and neither is a pickup.

What the paddling is like. Sea Glass Island is an open crossing with more wind exposure. Mangel Halto is sheltered water and mangrove channels, flatter and more forgiving.

The middle of the tour. Sea Glass Island gives you time ashore on the island. Mangel Halto gives you two snorkel stops.

Snorkeling. Both tours include snorkel gear. Mangel Halto is the stronger snorkel product by some distance; if fish are the reason you booked, book that one.

Mangroves. Only on the Mangel Halto route. The Sea Glass crossing does not go through mangroves, and anyone telling you otherwise is describing a different tour.

Who each one suits. Sea Glass Island suits first visits, families with collectors in them, and anyone who likes a destination. Mangel Halto suits snorkelers, birders, nervous first time paddlers and photographers.

Time of day. Both run at 8:30 AM, 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Morning is calmest on either route. Midday gives the strongest underwater light, which favours Mangel Halto. Evening favours Sea Glass Island for the crossing home.

If you only have one morning

Take Sea Glass Island at 8:30 AM. It is the more complete first impression of this coast, the water is at its calmest, and you land somewhere, which is what people remember and photograph. Mangel Halto rewards a second visit more than it rewards a rushed first one.

If you have two

Do both, and do them in that order. Sea Glass Island on the first morning for the arrival, Mangel Halto on the second for the snorkeling, once you already know how a kayak behaves under you.
