What languages do our guides speak?

A safety briefing you only half understood is not a safety briefing. Neither is a guide explaining a mangrove nursery in a language you are translating in your head while trying to paddle. So it matters, and here is the straight answer to what we can and cannot do.

Three languages on the water

Our guides work in English, Spanish and Papiamento. That covers the briefing, the safety instructions, the narration during the tour and any conversation you want to have on the way.

These are not phrasebook languages for our crew. They are local, and all three are languages they actually live in, which is the difference between somebody who can deliver a script and somebody who can answer the question you asked afterwards.

Papiamento, and why it is on the list

Papiamento is Aruba's own language, spoken here and on the neighbouring islands. It is a creole built over centuries from Portuguese and Spanish, with Dutch, African languages and English layered in, and it is the language most Arubans think in.

You do not need a word of it to take a tour. We list it because it tells you something about who is guiding you. This is a crew from here, describing their own coast, not a seasonal hire reading a laminated card.

How a mixed group works

With a cap of 10 guests, mixed language groups are normal and they work fine. The guide gives the safety briefing in whichever languages the group needs, then narrates in the dominant one and repeats the good bits for anyone who needs it. Small groups make that possible; a group of forty would not.

If a language really matters to your group, a private departure removes the question entirely, because the whole tour runs in your language.

Tell us when you book

Add a note with your booking, or message us on WhatsApp at +1 786 971 2221, and say which language you would prefer. We will tell you honestly which departures are the best fit. It takes thirty seconds and it is the difference between a good tour and a tour you watched.

Dutch, German, French and everything else

Here is the honest limit. We do not promise a guided tour in Dutch, German, French, Portuguese or anything outside our three languages, and we are not going to imply otherwise to win a booking.

Our website is published in English, Spanish and Dutch, so you can read every detail of the tour in Dutch before you commit. On the water, the guiding happens in English, Spanish or Papiamento. In practice most European visitors take the tour in English without any difficulty, because a kayak briefing is short, physical and demonstrated rather than lectured.

If you are unsure whether your English is up to it, message us and describe the situation. We would rather have that conversation than have you spend 2.5 hours guessing.

A few words you will hear

Bon dia is good morning, and it is how your guide will greet you. Danki is thank you, and masha danki is thank you very much. Dushi means sweet or lovely and gets applied to food, people, days and occasionally kayaks. Ayo is goodbye.

Use one of them at the end of the tour and watch what happens. It is a small thing and it goes a long way here.
